Last weekend, members of M-A’s Large Highschool Colliders (LHC) program traveled to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to present their finalized projects to members of the general public.
The group of 15 M-A students, under the supervision of physics teacher and Cal Poly SLO alumnus Kevin Coulombe, began work on their posters in September, producing high-level research on various advanced physics topics. Poster topics varied from antimatter to string theory to medical applications of physics.
In addition to the presentation, trip activities included hiking, bowling, and visiting the beach. Students also attended a master class, which taught data analysis of particles. Says senior Simran Kashyap, “Getting to visit Cal Poly and being able to work with actual particle collision data to get a feel for how the whole process works was very informational.”
The next stops for the LHC group include a poster conference in August with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and a trip to the real Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland.
Junior Anya Kulikov reflects, “The trip was really fun and engaging. It was great to see our hard work over the year pay off.”
